Pro-Level Home Turf: Sam Burns Backyard Golf Haven

Sam Burns made his breakthrough on Tour after joining the professional ranks in the 2017 season and has kept getting better every season. He’s collected multiple PGA Tour wins, including two straight Valspar Championships and early professional success on the Korn Ferry Tour — achievements that make clear why he values realistic play.
PROJECT SNAPSHOT
Putting green: 1,000 sq ft — GB177 (Golden Bear Putt), color 301
Lawn turf grass: 1,500 sq ft — 164SW, color 301
Sand bunker: 144 sq ft — Artificial turf topped with real sand
Total project: 2,644 sq ft
THE PUTTING SURFACE: GB177 GOLDEN BEAR PUTT
Sam went with GB177 (color 301) for a practice green that reads like real greens. The low, thick pile gives consistent ball roll and uniform pace, so every stroke offers a lesson. For a player who values touch practice between tournaments, that reliability counts.

THE TURF LAWN: 164SW IN COLOR 301
The 1,500 sq ft lawn area uses 164SW in the identical shade to create a smooth transition from putting green to fringe. That space is ideal for warmups, small chip shots, backyard fun, and maintaining a neat yard with easy maintenance.

THE BUNKER: REAL SAND OVER TURF
Instead of a fake sand look, Sam’s bunker uses real sand applied over artificial grass. That offers authentic bunker practice while preserving clean edges and low maintenance around the green. It’s a practical idea for anyone considering a synthetic grass installation with custom features.

WHY THIS SETUP WORKS SO WELL
This setup offers both pro training and daily enjoyment. A dedicated putting surface lets Sam perfect speed and line. The artificial lawn provides gentile landing zones for shots and a place for family and friends to use. The sand trap delivers realistic bunker practice without the fuss of a full-scale bunker renovation.
Sam’s Golf Journey: Sam claimed his first title at the Savannah Golf Championship in 2018, birdying the last three holes to win, and later won more PGA Tour events, including the Sanderson Farms Championship and the Valspar Championship. He refined his play at the LSU golf program before rising on Tour.
